Canoe Adventure in the Amazon

This is the ultimate adventure tour for Amazon explorers. You’ll spend eight days exploring the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve in the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest by canoe, paddling downstream along the Aguas Negras River, Cuyabeno River and Aguarico River, as well as exploring the famous Laguna Grande Lake and its spectacular Macrolobium trees. This no-frills tour will have you camping in the rainforest and making contact with local indigenous peoples in a truly authentic experience.


Description

A truly unique way to explore the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is by canoe. This tour is for adventurous travelers looking to have a no-frills experience in the Amazon rainforest. You will need to be in good physical condition as you will be canoeing up to six hours per day, although most of the time you’ll be floating downstream. Three of the nights you’ll be camping by the banks of Aguas Negras River and the other nights you’ll stay at either rustic huts or at the Magic River Ecolodge.
 
This tour is only available for over 12s and for a minimum of four persons and a maximum of 10. Reservations must be made at least a month in advance. Four and five day tours are available on request.

Sample itinerary

Day 1 - 4 - Lago Agrio - Aguas Negras River
Transport from Lago Agrio to Aguas Negras River. The first four days of this adventure will be spent canoeing down the blackwater Aguas Negras River for about six hour a day. This will be combined with short hikes through the jungle each day. You’ll do some fishing and relaxing in the evenings. Each night you’ll camp at campsites along the river. On the fourth day you’ll arrive at Cuyabeno River, which is much larger than Aguas Negras. That night you’ll stay in a rustic hut owned by the Kichwa community of Playas de Cuyabeno. Meals included: B/L/D (No breakfast on first morning)
Day 5 - Playas de Cuyabeno
On day five you’ll have the chance to do jungle hikes in the area through primary rainforest. You’ll also enjoy a night walk and see the jungle come alive by night. At night you’ll stay another night in the rustic hut owned by the Kichwa community of Playas de Cuyabeno. Meals included: B/L/D
Day 6 - Cuyabeno River - Aguarico River
Early morning bird-watching before heading out once again to canoe down Cuyabeno River until it reaches the larger Aguarico River (three-four hours of canoeing). You might get the chance to see river dolphins. After lunch you’ll visit the modern indigenous community of Playas de Cuyabeno and a motor canoe will bring you back upriver to the rustic hut. Meals included: B/L/D
Day 7 - Magic River Ecolodge
You’ll get to relax a little on day seven traveling upstream by motor canoe until you reach the Magic River Ecolodge (four hours). You might get the chance to visit a shaman en route to learn about medicinal plants and healing. Afternoon visit to the flooded forest of Laguna Grande to enjoy the sunset. Meals included: B/L/D
Day 8 - Laguna Grande - Lago Agrio
A morning of canoeing through the flooded forest (igapó) in Laguna Grande Lake to come up close to the marvelous Macrolobium trees. You’ll also get the chance to explore smaller lagoons in the nearby interconnected lakes and creeks. After lunch at the Magic River Ecolodge you’ll return to the park entrance by motor canoe. Private transport to Lago Agrio (two hours). Arrive Lago Agrio around 6pm. Meals included: B/L/-
