Description

The Mashpi Experience will take you into the heart of the Equatorial Chocó Bio-Region on the western slope of the Ecuadorian Andes. Mashpi Rainforest Biodiversity Reserve is a 1300 hectare private reserve containing both cloud forest and rainforest. This is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet, filled with an incredible range of plants and animals.
 
You’ll enjoy guided night walks, trekking, visit waterfalls, enjoy bird watching and butterfly spotting, as well as experiencing the forest canopy with the lodges uniquely designed sky bike. Mashpi Lodge has designed a network of trails to help you understand the various life-zones in the reserve. The contemporary architecture of the lodge itself combines glass and steel to create a cosy cocoon within the forest, containing lounges, massage room, jacuzzi, huge picture windows and incredible accommodation.

Sample itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival
Arrival at Mashpi Lodge and introductory talk about the cloud forest and the activities during your stay. After lunch you’ll take an afternoon excursion on the Napa Trail during which you’ll learn about forest conservation for the Chocó region and enjoy the incredible scenery. At the end of the trail you’ll visit an “iron palm” forest. You’ll enjoy some incredible bird watching during this hike. At the end of the day you have the option to attend evening lecture. Day 2 - Life Center & Cucharillos Waterfall & Night Walk
You’ll start with an early wake-up with coffee or hot chocolate and cookies. You’ll then walk through the forest to the Life Center along the Howler Monkeys trail. Early in the morning the trail is full of noises produced by rare birds such as the Rufous-fronted Wood-quail. You’ll enjoy a picnic breakfast at the Life Center from where you can appreciate an array of wildlife. At the center you’ll learn about butterflies. You’ll then return for some relaxation, jacuzzi or massage at the lodge before lunch. In the afternoon you’ll hike to the Cucharillos Waterfall, named after the Cucharillo tree. At night you’ll take a night hike to discover the sounds and smells of the forest before returning of a delicious dinner. Meals included: B/L/D
Day 3 - Bird Watching & Sky Bike & Hummingbirds
Before breakfast you’ll enjoy some bird watching. You’ll then go to the Sky Bike and Observation tower, an original and exciting way to explore the forest canopy. After lunch at the lodge you’ll depart to the Hummingbird Station to observe an array of hummingbirds. Meals included: B/L/D
Day 4 - Bird Watching & Copal Waterfall & Departure
Early morning bird watching followed by breakfast. You’ll then visit the 50ft Copal Waterfall with a 2-hour hike, after which you’ll return to the hotel by noon to refresh and check out before lunch. Meals included: B/L/-
