Pacific – Andes Train Weekend Adventure

Venture out of Cuenca and get to know the vast contrasts of southern Ecuador. Travel to the Pacific coast to catch a train and travel up from sea level into the Andes, where you’ll spend the night before visiting ancient Incan ruins and heading back to Cuenca.

Description

You’ll set off early from Cuenca and head to Durán train station on the Pacific Coast. Here you’ll catch a train at 8am to travel throughout the day enjoying the variety of landscapes you can see from the train. Train travel in Ecuador is a unique experience. After a multi-million dollar project ($280 million to be precise) to restore Ecuador’s historic railway tracks and stations, Ecuador’s rail network reopened in 2013 as a luxury steam train experience for travelers. The experience has been a World Travel Award winner in 2014 and 2015, and is nominated for the award in 2016. The train has a panoramic observation lounge with air conditioning, a terrace and a bar. You’ll be traveling from an altitude of 80 meters above sea level to 2340 meters above sea level, and will experience drastic differences in temperature, of approximately 15 – 34 C.

From Durán you’ll head for Bucay for lunch and a chocolate tasting. You’ll then travel up into the Andes via the famous Devil’s Nose. You’ll reach Alausí at 5pm where you’ll stay at Hostería La Quinta and relax at dinner. In the morning you’ll visit Ingapirca, the most important Inca ruins in Ecuador, before enjoying a delicious lunch at Posada Ingapirca, and heading back to Cuenca. Minimum group 6 persons.
