Quilotoa Lake

The Avenue of the Volcanoes is an incredible display of the power of nature. One of our favorite locations is Quilotoa Crater, a water-filled 3km-wide caldera to the west of the Ecuadorian Andes in Ecuador. You’ll depart early from Quito and travel through the incredible Andean landscape and several indigenous communities. First stop is a visit with a local family to learn about their life and work, followed by Zumbahua market (only on Saturdays), before reaching Quilotoa Lake. Here you’ll enjoy the spectacular views, hike down into the crater, and then either walk up (an hour) or rent a mule to bring you back from the depths.

Quilotoa is a water-filled 3km-wide caldera formed when the volcano collapsed during an eruption about 800 years ago spreading ash throughout the northern Ecuadorian Andes. The crater has since accumulated rainwater to create a 250m deep crater lake. It’s a fabulous greenish color because of dissolved minerals. There are fumaroles on the lake floor and hot springs on the eastern edge of the lake.
Zumbahua Market
Every Saturday Zumbagua, located in the province of Cotopaxi and near the Quilotoa crater, comes to life with this curious and colorful market packed with traders, buyers and produce. There are stands selling everything from vegetables, animals and even barber or tailoring services.
